On the occasion of Song Kun’s 2012 solo exhibition “A Thousand Kisses Deep,” Ullens Center for Contemporary Art produced an eponymous catalogue. It boasts a unique design, comprised of a single sheet of card stock that folds like an accordion. The featured cycle of paintings, “A Thousand Kisses Deep,” shows the progression of the artist’s practice in the years leading up to the exhibition. The subject matter unfolds coherently but not exactly predictably: Inner Mongolian punks, cyborg girls, and jellyfish all make appearances, split along either side of an imagined line between spirituality and carnality that dissected the exhibition space, and which finds separation between the front and back of this fold-out book. This catalogue includes an essay by Philip Tinari and plates of the exhibited artworks.
