The '85 New Wave: China's First Contemporary Art Movement was published in conjunction with the opening exhibition of the same name curated by Fei Dawei.
This exhibition was the first in-depth and comprehensive presentation of the “'85 New Wave” art since the 1990s. The exhibition showcased 137 artworks from 30 individual artists and groups. Besides displaying representative works from the “'85 New Wave,” the exhibition also revealed a large number of unpublished documents to the public, delving into the inner thoughts of this historic art movement.
This catalogue includes two major essays from Fei Dawei and Huang Zhuan, statements from all participating artists, images of their exhibited works, and a detailed chronology documenting major art events from 1976 to 1990.
In addition to the exhibition catalogue, UCCA also published two other volumes, Archives of the '85 New Wave I & II, edited by Fei Dawei. These two volumes contain primary materials related to the movement and artistic creations at that time, and are among the most detailed records of important texts from the '85 period to date. The two-volume archives consist of five collections in total. Each collection introduces a group of art collectives or individuals (Gu Wenda, Wu Shanzhuan, Xu Bing, Xiamen Dada, and Huang Yong Ping, respectively), using detailed interviews as a means to introduce relevant materials and documents.
In addition, a compact, small-format commemorative booklet was also released for the exhibition, enabling readers to quickly access exhibition-related content and artist introductions.
