UCCA x Simple Bamboo Wares Studio: Bamboo Weaving Workshop

Location:  Salon
Language:  Chinese with English translation

In collaboration with Simple Bamboo Wares Studio, UCCA is pleased to present a bamboo weaving workshop for UCCA members. During the workshop, participants will be guided by artist and teacher Mo Xiaotu in weaving their own bamboo bracelets and rings, fitting accessories for the warm summer months.

Bamboo weaving, one of China’s intangible cultural heritages, was intimately woven with traditional daily life throughout much of China’s history. Research indicates that as early as the Han Dynasty there were nearly 60 different types of tools made of bamboo, and by the Ming and Qing Dynasty that number grew to 300. The frequent appearance of the bamboo radical in Chinese characters attests to the importance assigned to bamboo in China. Some bamboo wares have disappeared with the passage of time, while others have been preserved. Nonetheless, principles of craftsmanship and practical wisdom embodied in the pieces are useful for both modern design and living.
