In 1978, the film Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa wo Watare starring Ken Takakura was released in China to immense acclaim. The first Japanese film to be shown after the Cultural Revolution, Ken's brooding charisma quickly became a new model for masculinity for Chinese audiences. Here, Ken Takakura is not simply a Japanese film star. He is a trans-cultural icon, and to mark the first annual memorial of Ken Takakura's death, The Japan Foundation and UCCA are honored to present five of his most prolific films, each representing a different period of his career.
