“Beijing 1986” is the name of a song, music video, and record, but more importantly was a generational milestone, and marker of a turning point in history: the inception of the Chinese contemporary enlightenment movement.

It was also the year of the birth of Chinese rock. Then Beijing youth Zhou Fengling devoured Western culture, going to disco parties, learning guitar, listening to unknown American and European rock bands, and later forming his own band. In 1994, Zhou and his friends Dou Wei, Ou Ge, and Ou Yang performed at the “Force of Chinese Rock” concert in Kowloon. Zhou Fengling established the bands “Five of Hearts” and “Mr. Zhou”. On July 15th, 1986, he released his new album “Beijing 1986” with Modernsky’s Badhead record label. In remembrance of this album, we will be holding a lecture held in UCCA’s auditorium titled “Era Harbinger: Beijing 1986”.

Zhou Fengling’s comrades in music, Ou Yang, Ou Ge, and Zang Hongfei, along with Modernsky head Shen Lihui, will be discussing together the inside history of Beijing’s rock music, and the ups and downs of the period. Artist and curator, Qin Siyuan (he was also a major band member of Acupoint) UCCA’s deputy director You Yang, and critic Zhang Xiaozhou will analyze “Beijing 1986” via the lens of culture and contemporary artistic trends. Photographer Gao Yuan recorded a whole epoch of Beijing Rock & Roll and offered a unique perspective via her camera.

On July 22nd there will be a concert by Zhou Fengling at Modernsky Lab. He will be issuing the new re-release of “Beijing 1986”. There will also be a “Beijing 1986 Black light Party”.

How can the tumultuous year of 1986 contain so many memories unbeknownst to most people? How should they be dealt with and understood? With the passing of time, this is not merely an expression of nostalgia. 1986 Beijing needs to be rediscovered and renewed.
